What are you most looking forward to at the 2016 Festival?
I’ve been to the festival a couple of time before, so I’m looking forward to seeing some more of the city, as well as meeting old friends (both fans and fellow authors) and hopefully lots of new ones too. When did you realise you wanted to be a writer? I’ve wanted to be a writer since I was five or six years of, though I was in my early teens when I decided for definite that this was the path in life I most wanted to follow. What book do you find yourself re-reading most often? I don’t re-read many books these days, as I don’t have as much reading time as I did when I was a young, single man, so prefer to expose myself to new material. But the book I’ve probably read more times than any other is Lord Of The Rings. If you weren’t a writer, what would you be? A struggling writer! Even if I wasn’t getting paid to write, I would write for fun. I can’t imagine myself having a different career. My plan, if the writing didn’t work out, was to get temporary jobs every few years or so, save some money, then spend as much time writing as I could before the bills mounted up and I had to go find another bit of temp work. And finally, we have a number of aspiring writers attending the Festival. What one piece of advice would you give them? Write. There’s no magic involved in becoming a writer. It’s all about hard work. The more you write, the more you will learn, and the more you will find yourself able to do.
